• RECYCLE, REPURPOSE, REINVENT, REUSE…PART 1

REPURPOSE, REUSE, RECYCLE, REINVENT…. I think we all get huge satisfaction from using something for other than the purpose it was actually intended … If your local then we get a lot of our inspiration from some local Facebook groups – ZERO WASTE CORFU is one of my favourites, along with PLASTIC FREE GREECE and LET’S DO THIS CORFU………. While [and before] we were waiting for the license and of course in lockdown, we have been coming up with ideas for using things that may otherwise have been thrown away… These are some of my favourites …so far – lots more to come! . THE WASHING MACHINE FIRE PIT… Our…

  • STAIRCASE shipping container

Staircase, space-saving and a talking point!

STAIRWAY TO ???????? Sorry, soon as I write this the song comes into my head so I find myself humming along in my head…LOL So for our actual container house design, we do not have a staircase apart from one outside for the roof terrace – so space not really an issue – as for health reasons our house design needed to be one floor. But whenever anyone sees this staircase it is always a topic of conversation and everyone has to walk up and down at least a few times.. So while we are making the shipping container home we are living in our little cottage in the village…

  • LET THERE BE LIGHT – a skylight that is !!!

Now to be honest apart from the whole planning the layout thing this has to be my most favourite part so far! As a family, we are all quite lucky in the way that when we talk about ideas the others get it [mostly!] and understand what we mean. As I have worked in the property market I can see that sometimes people are not so lucky and just cannot “see” the vision when you say to them “oh but you can do this and this and imagine it would be like this” etc – and you just get a blank stare, until you get on Pinterest and show them…

  • WELDING

    WELDING EQUIPMENT….

BUYING WELDING EQUIPMENT TO KEEP YOUR WELDER HAPPY!! So if like us you are going to do a lot of the welding for your containers yourself you need to invest in decent equipment. There is going to be a LOT of welding in a house made of metal, plus it helps that your welder is kept happy – happy welder gets more work done, especially when he is a teenager and can still get distracted easily!!!…. Obviously being made of metal the welding is one way to cut down the cost if you can do it yourself! WELDING EQUIPMENT – MAKE SURE IT IS POWERFUL ENOUGH!…

  • SANDING/ SPRAYING – and MISTAKE number 1

So “Arnie The Trial container” has landed and obviously we have our first mistake. We knew Arnie was not going to stay where he is for now but we should have made some kind of properly flat area for him or at least some cement squares as there is actually only 4 corners of about 20×20 cm touching the ground. There is some jacking up etc and he now sits on 4 “makeshift” corners but is still slightly “off”…Still he won’t be part of the end house so not overly worried. So major point – make sure you have properly prepared the area where your container will sit! Yes it…

  • ARNIE ARRIVES!!!

So part of the land is cleared – the money is saved and our first order for our first “trial” container goes in. This trial container is literally just that as when we do the other containers they will be our home and we are not planning on ever moving again so they need to be right, so we are going to try the ideas we have and see if they work and we are happy with them. We don’t have the finances to get it wrong and have to redo it all…. Obviously we have done tons [and tons!] of research about this and one of the things we…

  • ENGINEER / ARCHITECT AND THINNING OUT !!……

Probably the most important new best friend you will need! That is the person making your plans…. It is amazing how difficult it suddenly becomes when you are thinking of getting 3 rather large human beings to live in a very very very small space – the beauty of where we are though being that 90% of your life you can live outside. Now don’t take that as me saying that 90% of the weather here is sunny and hot – it is not!! We just have thick English skin and are quite prepared to sit outside even with thermals, thick blankets, and a fire pit – and hot chocolate……

  • THE LAND 2

So as time has marched on nature has reclaimed the land again and it is almost as over grown as it was before, which is to be honest more than heartbreaking as before we literally spent every spare minute getting it cleared the first time……… So we start trimming, chopping, strimming again and remember what bought us here in the first place – tantalising glimpses of the view that caught us last time! ……. but time has indeed marched on and we are not as young or as healthy as we were and cannot work as we once did so Jamie [our 18 year old and much more energetic son!!…

  • Step 1 – FIND YOUR LAND……..

Now, this part of our story actually has nothing to do with shipping containers – it is just here so you can see how we came to this point – so feel free to skip it if you are just here for research on shipping containers as your home…….this is also a very emotional write for me as this story actually started way over 10 years ago and to suddenly see some movement again is raising all sorts of emotions in me……. So as the years rolled along [we arrived in Corfu in 1989] my parents realised we were not coming back and thought we should start looking for something…

  • SHIPPING CONTAINER HOME

    GETTING STARTED WITH THE BLOG…

So ..Here we go …. First off you need to know that I have never considered myself a super-smart person nor a total idiot – mind you I have done some pretty stupid things in my life but usually, that was the fault of the alcohol, not mine! And I am SOOO glad social media was not around then! So basically I am trying to let you know that I am not great with technology – I have set this site up pretty much on my own and you will have to bear with me if photos etc do not work so well – I will no doubt have the…
