RECYCLE, REPURPOSE, REINVENT, REUSE…PART 1

REPURPOSE, REUSE, RECYCLE, REINVENT….

I think we all get huge satisfaction from using something for other than the purpose it was actually intended …

If your local then we get a lot of our inspiration from some local Facebook groups – ZERO WASTE CORFU is one of my favourites, along with PLASTIC FREE GREECE and LET’S DO THIS CORFU……….

THE NEW COOLER/STORAGE BENCH [FRIDGE FREEZER AND PALLETS]

While [and before] we were waiting for the license and of course in lockdown, we have been coming up with ideas for using things that may otherwise have been thrown away…

These are some of my favourites …so far – lots more to come! .

THE WASHING MACHINE FIRE PIT…

Our washing machine was no longer working so Jamie took it apart – which proved REALLY hard to do as it had maybe stopped working but was still going to put up a fight! He was bashing the hell out of it for ages!  Eventually, he got the drum out…[there were some choice words for a while ! ]

He then welded on some iron legs, quick paint of the legs with some anti-rust and voila – Firepit!!! I am a MASSIVE fan of fairy lights and so this to me is just AWESOME!

PLANTERS TO SAVE ME BENDING!

Our builder friend was doing a renovation and I had to go and see him about something … and there was a large pile of broken/bent rain guttering …. He kindly dropped them off for me, I painted them with some anti-rust again to help them last as long as possible ..Drilled some holes every 12 inches for drainage…

REPURPOSE PLANTER

Andy made a template for the ends and cut them from a thin ply which we sealed and done ….. For now, we have some attached to the fence – but when the house is built they will be on the wall…

THE FRIDGE FREEZER GARDEN COOLER/BENCH/STORAGE

So our friends fridge freezer also stopped working – and we nabbed it ….

REPURPOSE

We then spent a fun family day designing and making a box for it from old pallets – painted it with wood preserver and it is PERFECT! We tested it with some ice and beers – the ice was still solid the day after – the beers were gone though LOL… it is the right height for us, large people, to sit on and during the winter months, we are using it for storage! Jamie drilled holes in the bottom so the melted ice could leak out…the final

MORE PLANTERS TO SAVE US BENDING –

Now Andy had to work out so many angles for these – so they would lie flat on the floor whilst going downhill – but I am thrilled with them…. They were made with broken pallets and some cheap corrugated metal !!

They also work on the  Hügelkultur theory – so we filled the base with rubble from a neighbour knocking down their house… then we added a layer of foam [repurpused from yachts being overhauled] – to allow water to drain but keep the soil – then we added wood chips [from the local wood yard] …. In the wood chips, we placed logs of different sizes …..

On top, we ran a pipe with holes in for irrigation [it will be joined to the main system when we make the outdoor kitchen] … on top of that, we added soil and seeds …Peas, rocket, sage, rosemary, and nasturtiums [from the chef point of view I always wanted to try them as they are completely edible!!!] Happy planters!!!

THE TIGER, THE DRAGON AND THE WARDROBE lol

The heading is due to our Chinese birth signs and obviously a play on the movie … we were making a joke about it while we were doing them – it was one of those “you had to be there” moments LOL…

REPURPOSE

So we had a flood in our storeroom and 2 of the wardrobes got wrecked – they are only chipboard so they swelled and buckled out of shape ..

As mentioned we have bending problems and so seemed crazy not to reuse them and make more raised beds…

We added rubble inside again – then lined them with an old carpet for drainage and to support the soil – added soil and seeds and done – and the seeds as you can see are very happy!

One has beans, swiss chard, and rocket – the other is carrots, swede, and parsnip!!!!

Once lockdown is done, the boys will make the outsides look like the other ones with some metal and pallet wood …

And wait until you see what else they are making!!!!!!!!
